Newsome W.M.F.C. were reformed in 1999 after Newsome United W.M.C. folded in 1982. Newsome
entered a team in the Huddersfield Works League Division 2, this team went on to win the league by 8 points and
scored over a 100 goals in the process.
Such was the extent of interest of having a football team in Newsome for the first time in nearly 20 years that
a reserve side was formed to play in the first division of the Works league for the season 2000-2001. This enabled
the first XI to move up into division 5 of the Huddersfield & District League. The first XI won 3 consecutive
titles, culminating in winning Division 3 and the Groom Cup in 2002-2003.
After a season in the Huddersfield Works League the second XI also had there share of success, moving up into
Huddersfield & District Reserve Division 4, they also won consecutive titles, narrowly missing out on promotion to
the first division by 1 point. The second X1 finally gained first division status after winning the division 2
title in the 2004/05 season after winning their final match of the season at Headfield Road against local rivals Berry
Brow 2-0 to take that seasons honours. The first X1 also gained division 1 status the following season winning the
league handsomely by 12 points at their new home Newsome High School.
Newsome's nomadic ways have now seen them settle at Newsome High School after starting out there in 1999, however
the condition of the playing surface forced them to move to Moorend High School in 2001. The big pitch at Crosland Moor
suited Newsome's flowing football but the condition of the playing surface and the area around the pitch deteriorated.
Newsome briefly moved to Headfield Road in 2004 but were only offered a 2-year lease by the local council, as the pitch
had been ear marked for building a new school. Luckily Newsome High School had changed its status to a sports college
enabling money to be spent on drainage on the pitches, this has now been Newsome WMC's new home for the past 2 seasons.
Newsome’s first X1 finished mid-table in their first season at Newsome Sports College. The second X1 carried
on playing at Headfield Road for another season, due to the new surface at Newsome not being able to with
stand a game a week. Headfield Road proved a fortress for the second’s in season 2004/5, winning the Reserve
Division 2 in title on the last day of the season by beating local rivals Berry Brow Liberal Club 2- 0.
The first team signed a few new faces at the start of season 2005/6 and this was instrumental in them
winning the Division 2 title and gaining promotion to the top flight for the first time in their
history. The following season 2006/7 Newsome set out in their quest for the championship thinking
that with a bit of luck with injuries and suspensions they might have a chance. It turned out to be
a three horse race with Heywood Sports and Diggle. But the title came to Newsome in their
penultimate game away at Diggle. Newsome had already played Diggle three times previously
this season, with cup draws throwing them together in the Challenge and Barlow Cup. Newsome
just had their noses in front beating them in the league, and Challenge Cup but losing out
to them in the Barlow Cup. In this game which was to be the Championship decider Newsome
won 3-1 with Joel Bryce scoring a hat trick. |
